Captain Alan W. Price

Captain Price has an extensive background in Human Factors design and implementation at a major US airline, and served as a facilitator of the initial cadre of Crew Resource Management (CRM) facilitators before being named “Pilot Manager” of the Human Factors Program. Asked to redesign and present the New Captain's Leadership program (“In Command”), Capt. Price redeveloped and led the program for over 5 years, while presenting the course to over 2,000 new captains at his airline.

In August of 2001, Capt. Price assumed leadership of the world's largest pilot base in Atlanta, with over 3,300 pilots assigned. When “9/11” occurred 41 days later, Alan was in position to lead his pilot group through the most difficult and challenging days most had ever faced. During the weeks and months that followed, Capt. Price applied and practiced the leadership skills he had taught to each new captain. From the initial grounding of the airline to a full and complete recovery, Capt. Price's leadership was a decisive factor in restoring his airline to its position of leadership in the industry.

Capt. Price's flying background spans portions of five decades, with over 20,000 total hours in the air across a wide variety of aircraft in both the military and civilian sectors, in domestic and international operations.

Since retiring from the airline in 2004, Capt. Price has served as a leadership and safety consultant across a variety of industries. Working with clients such as Partners Hospital System, Southwest Airlines, numerous hospitals across the US, and Aero México Airlines, he has developed and presented programs on patient safety, cultural transformation, strategic planning, leadership, leadership for a time of crisis, and world-class communication through expert facilitation. He is also a certified International Operational Safety Auditor (IOSA) and has performed operational safety audits for airlines throughout the world.

As a Senior Executive Safety Coach with LifeWings, Captain Price has for more than 20 years worked in dozens of hospitals in furtherance of patient safety, leading hundreds of workshops, classes, and coaching sessions with physicians, medical staff, and C-suite leaders. For the past 9 years, Alan has worked with Hoag Presbyterian Hospital in Newport Beach, CA, guiding six major hospital departments through adoption of the LifeWings Patient Safety System.

Capt. Price's knowledge of communication and team concepts, leadership, and cultural transformation make him a highly regarded speaker and workshop leader. He has written extensively about the human factors of leadership, teamwork, and communication, and presents a program titled “Leadership for a Time of Crisis – A Chief Pilot Shares the Lessons of 9/11.”
